problems with rachel carson

Rachel Carson was most certainly interested in the positive affects that her ideas would have on the world.  However, many people have discovered a negative aspect of her work.  When she discusses the precautions that people should take against harming the environment, it can be interpreted by some people that she is trying to control the decisions that people make regarding potentially saving their own lives and their children's lives.  This is especially an issue in less developed nations who depend more on the United States for information regarding the environment and pest control.  Nevertheless, I believe Rachel Carson only had the best intentions and was not trying to scare or control anyone.

silent spring

Silent Spring is a book by Rachel Carson about all the bad things that pesticides have done to the environment.  It discusses how people have neglected to care about the environment sufficiently and the problems with the chemical industry.  The book goes into detail about the relationship between the soil and the chemicals and relates it to the affect chemicals have on animals.  The author provides ways to change and how to be smart about these problems.

Rachel Carson was a writer, scientist, and ecologist.  She graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women and was hired by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to write scripts and eventually ended up pursuing independent writing projects.  She was an incredible woman!

scientific findings with data

At Penn State University, researchers did an experiment to understand effects of weight training on weight loss.  They put overweight people on a low-calorie diet and divided them into three groups.  One group did no exercise, another did aerobic exercise 3 days a week, and the third did aerobic exercise and weight training 3 days a week.

RESULTS: The weight lifters lost 6 more pounds than those who did not lift weight.  Weights led to 40% greater fat loss.

This is significant because many people think that aerobic exercise is more helful in losing fat, but weight training is also important.

What is life?

the dictionary states that life is:

1. the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death

2. the existence of an individual human being or animal

3. the period between the birth and death of a living thing, esp. a human being

Life is to glorify God. Every living creature was made by him to show how awesome he is.  Even things as small as unicellular organisms-- actually, especially things such as small unicellular organisms-- were created to show how powerful He is to have created things so tiny we can't even see with our eyes.
Even though life presents challenges and devastations everything revolves around and points to Him.  He shows us how much better He is than anything on the earth that we could live for and that when we rely on him during times of hardship we will learn so much! That's what life is. When people get confused and think that life is only about pleasing themselves or making money or having fun, there is nothing to rely on when everything lets you down-- and that's not really living! Also, when everything is going well and people think there is no need for God, that's not really living either because there is no purpose or meaning to anything without God.  God wants us to know there is so much more to life, and it is to reflect his greatness!

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Diets For Blood Types!

type A diet:

- Type As should eat their food in as natural a state as possible: pure, fresh, and organic in order to boost immune system and help to stop life threatening diseases.

type B diet:

-biggest struggle = weight
- corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds cause weight gain by affecting the efficiency of metabolic process.
- eliminating these foods should cause blood sugar levels to go back to normal.
- should avoid chicken. it can attack bloodstream and increase potential for strokes and immune disorders
- replace chicken with goat, lamb, mutton, rabbit, or venison.
- also good for type B: green vegetables, eggs, and low fat diary

type O diet:

- diet rich in saltwater fish and kelp to regulate thyroid gland
- bladder wrack to aid in weight control.
- recommended to take a licorice preparation called DGL to aid in discomfort from high levels of stomach acid.

type AB diet:

- avoid caffeine and alcohol
- focus on foods such as tofu, seafood, dairy, and green vegetables in order to lose weight
- avoid smoked or cured meats
- seafood is excellent, such as red snapper, salmon, sardines and tuna
- diary such as yogurt is beneficial.
- smaller more frequent meals
- should pay attention to combining certain foods (like avoid eating starches and proteins in the same meal).

The logic to this diet is that certain blood types affect the metabolism, stomach acid, and other aspects of health so that a modified diet can help significantly.  It relates to the discussion of the evolution of the tribes of man because it shows that there are types of people that have spread throughout the world.

mitochondrial eve

This is Mitochondrial Eve, and she is the genetic ancestor of all human beings.  She is important because mitochondrial DNA is carried directly from mother to child and does not change.  Understanding of Eve can help us to understand how people have changed and spread throughout the world and how we are all interconnected in a way.

my baby

My baby has joined with my other plant babies so now we have a family of plants in our dorm (amanda & I).  I am amazed at how much it changes daily.  I water them more often than my other plants because they do not require as much water, so it is a little adjustment because the sunflowers require a bit more attention.
